India’s textiles, with their distinctive grids or checkered patterns, are steeped in community traditions and lifestyles that have survived and evolved throughout generations. The brand name Injiri comes from the local dialect of Kalabari and means “real India.” The checkered textile pattern is traditionally known by a variety of names across India, such as gamosa, thundu, meli, Kattam, Khes, and others. Each pattern reflects the region and community that created it. This project is an Injiri’s Research Initiative, which aims to chronicle the vanishing textile before it is lost.
